Stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam
2014 - 2015

Stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam (SMBA) was the project space of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam until July 2016. The objective of SMBA was to present contemporary art from an Amsterdam context and to create an international platform by organizing exhibitions, lectures, debates, publications and residency programmes.

Hereunder a selection of exhibitions for which I worked.

Zachary Formwalt – Three exchanges
Zachary Formwalt focuses on the architecture of the OMA-designed Shenzhen Stock Exchange, and the Amsterdam stock and commodities exchange designed at the end of the nineteenth century by the socialist architect, H.P. Berlage. The architecture of the stock exchanges serves as a starting point to a profound investigation into the limitations of photography to represent capital and into the interrelationships between financial capitalism and image making.

Ruti Sela - with Museums of Bat Yam (MoBY)
Ruti Sela investigates issues with authority, sexuality and nationality in front of and through the possession of a handheld video camera. With this strategy, she explores the complexities of power in human relations.

Resolution 827 - with Museum of Contemporary Art Belgrado
The title of the exhibition, ‘Resolution 827’, refers to the UN resolution that was adopted in 1993 establishing the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY).The point of departure for the exhibition was to find a common denominator in the analysis of the societies of Serbia as well as other republics of the former Yugoslavia and the Netherlands, and to open up the debate on shared sore points, like the genocide in Srebrenica, that was subject to ICTY investigation.

Artists: Kristina Benjocki, Lana Cmajcanin and Adela Jušic, Anna Dasovic, Doplgenger, Saša Karalic, Vladimir Miladinovic, Quenton Miller, Charles van Otterdijk, Nikola Radic Lucati.

Curated by Zoran Eric, Jelle Bouwhuis and Joram Kraaijeveld.

Come As You Are - with Mezquita Fatih, Amsterdam
Come As You Are presents the proposals artists Gijs Frieling, Ad de Jong and designer Job Wouters made for the Fatih Mosque in Amsterdam. The Fatih Mosque, which is situated on Rozengracht 150, is in the midst of a renovation. The artists made proposals for the portal and the furnishing of the entrance hall. The first proposals were on view at Stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam, which is near the mosque. These proposals are meant as a starting point for dialogue.

Artists: Gijs Frieling, Ad de Jong, Job Wouters.

Algorithmic Rubbish: Daring to Defy Misfortune
The exhibition ‘Algorithmic Rubbish: Daring to Defy Misfortune’ – an automatically generated title – demonstrates how artists use and abuse, with great precision and humor, the mechanisms and strategies applied by large companies and governments. They provide a positive and opportunistic response to the often invisible, yet far-reaching interventions in our lives by taking matters into their own hands.

Artists: Blast Theory, James Bridle, Constant Dullaart, Femke Herregraven, Jennifer Lyn Morone, Matthew Plummer-Fernandez, Template, Suzanne Treister.

Curated by Annet Dekker.

Kamarado - with Clark House Initiative, Bombay
The exhibition brings together a diverse group of artists from various regions of the world. The conceptual core around which all these individual voices and artistic practices revolve is the idea of the comrade, a term that originally meant ‘one who shares the same room’. Within this framework, a surprising range of historical complexity arises, including some important, yet almost unknown, Dutch figures who made remarkable contributions to world history. The newly commissioned and existing works enter into conversation with each other, deciphering and bringing the ideas and reversals in Kamarado to the fore.

Artists: Adrian Melis, Amol K Patil, Jeronimo Voss, Sharelly Emanuelson, Sawangwongse Yawnghwe, Sosa Joseph, Htein Lin, Judy Blum Reddy, Mieke Van de Voort, Paolo Chiasera, and Rupali Patil.
